Cell-type and circuit based mechanisms underlying sex-specific behavior strategies
A large body of work has aimed to define the precise information encoded by dopaminergic projections innervating the ventral striatum. We first show that dopamine does not transmit a reward-based error signal as previously hypothesized. Next, through a series of experiments using recordings, manipulations, computational modeling, and behavior, we replace our current understanding with a novel formalized theory that explains the diverse role of striatal dopamine in behavioral control.
