A complete understanding of brain function requires a comprehensive picture of how astrocytes fit within neuronal connectivity. However, the genetic programs that drive neuron-astrocyte communication are largely unknown. This study shows how mouse olfactory bulb astrocytes utilize an epigenetic mechanism wherein
serotonin directly controls gene expression to modulate olfactory circuits and
behaviors of smell.
